Cabinets for a House That Breathes Ocean Air

If you live a few miles or less from the beach, your kitchen spends a good part of the year in damp air. The marine layer rolls in overnight, the house is closed up, and moisture from cooking and running the dishwasher has nowhere to go. That is fine for tile and stone. It is hard on cabinets, and it shows first in the places you do not look at every day.

Where Cabinets Give Out

The sink base is almost always the first casualty. A slow drip from a supply line, a dishwasher hose that sweats, or just condensation under a cold drain pipe, and the floor of the cabinet starts to swell. The bottom edges of the doors next to the dishwasher go next, from steam when it opens. Along the toe kick, mopping water wicks up into any unsealed edge.

Most builder grade cabinets use particleboard boxes. Particleboard is stable when it stays dry, but once it absorbs water it swells and does not return to its original shape. The laminate or melamine skin lifts, hinge screws lose their grip, and the box sags.

What We Build With Instead

• Plywood boxes. Cabinet grade plywood holds screws better and tolerates occasional moisture much better than particleboard. It is not waterproof, but it recovers where particleboard crumbles.
• Sealed edges and backs. Every cut edge gets a finish or edge banding, including the ones nobody sees, because that is where moisture gets in.
• A sink base liner. A removable tray or a sealed bottom panel catches drips before they reach the wood.
• Doors made to move. Painted MDF doors are smooth and stable, but a five piece painted door can crack at the joints as the frame expands and contracts. In a damp room we often suggest a slab door, a quality thermofoil or veneer, or a stained finish that hides seasonal movement better than a crisp painted line.

Hardware That Does Not Rust

Salt air is the other problem, especially west of the freeway. Plated pulls and knobs pit and discolor. Cheap hinges and drawer slides rust at the pivots and start to bind. We specify stainless or solid brass pulls where it makes sense, and hinges and full extension slides with proper corrosion resistant finishes. Soft close mechanisms are worth it, but only from makers whose hardware is built for kitchen humidity.

Framed or Frameless, Inset or Overlay

Frameless cabinets give you a little more usable interior width, which counts in a small kitchen. Framed cabinets are more forgiving of walls that are not perfectly straight, which is common in older cottages. Inset doors look right in a period home but need tight, even gaps, and those gaps change as wood moves in damp weather. Full overlay doors are more tolerant. We talk through the tradeoffs with your house in mind rather than defaulting to one style.

Help the Cabinets by Drying the Room

The best cabinet in the world will struggle in a kitchen with no ventilation. A range hood ducted to the outside pulls cooking moisture out before it settles into the wood. A recirculating hood only filters grease and puts the steam right back into the room. If there is a way to run a duct through the roof or an exterior wall, we will plan for it.

Should You Replace or Keep What You Have?

If your existing boxes are plywood, dry and square, refacing them with new doors and hardware may be all you need. If the floors are soft and the sides have swollen, replacement is the only fix that lasts. We check before recommending either.
